Read what some of the staff think about our art curriculum!

Mrs Brady

I have loved working across different classes including Year 4, 5 and 6 to develop art skills. We looked at the River Wear and the different structures and it was amazing to see each year group apply different skills to create the iconic landmarks in Sunderland.

I love having the opportunity to be creative and hands on!

Mrs Graham

Art at Grange Park has developed into a skills-based, engaging subject. Children are given the opportunity to learn many skills, which is lovely to see and is making children become more confident in their own ability and the progression through school is incredible. The Remembrance Day work was so thought-provoking and a really beautiful touch.

Intent

The school believes that art is a vital part of children’s education and has a significant and valuable role in the taught curriculum, as well as the enrichment opportunities we offer our pupils.

Our role is to make art creative and inclusive as well as to develop the cultural capital for the children we care for.

Implementation

The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each art topic are mapped across each year group and throughout the school to ensure progression. The emphasis on knowledge ensures that children understand the context of the artwork, as well as the artists that they are learning about and being inspired by. This enables links to other curriculum areas, including humanities, with children developing a considerable knowledge of individual artists as well as individual works and art movements. A similar focus on skills means that children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination, as well as practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture.

The school’s high quality art curriculum is supported through the availability of a wide range of quality resources, which are used to support children’s confidence in the use of different media.

Impact

School displays reflect the children’s sense of pride in their artwork and this is also demonstrated by creative outcomes across the wider curriculum, as well as the progression of skills across the entire school. The school environment also celebrates children’s achievements in art and demonstrates the subject’s high status in the school, with outcomes, including sculptures, textiles and painting.

Grange Park Primary School's Culture Map

Working with artist Kerry Cook, our school's art subject lead and deputy headteacher, with the support of local funding, created some artistic drawings of key points in the local area and used to the depict the place on a 'Culture Map'.  We plan to share the maps with the community in the hope that they are used to explore the area on their doorstep.
