Geography

Intent

At Grange Park in geography we aim to inspire in pupils a fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.  We recognise the importance of deeper levels of knowledge and understanding to underpin pupils’ thinking, allowing all starting points to succeed. At Grange Park we use our local area to support and apply geographical skills so that the pupils can put their learning into context.

Implementation

The Investigative Curriculum Cycle is built around the principle of greater learner involvement in their work. It requires deep thinking and encourages learners to work use investigation and enquiry. Our geography curriculum is planned and sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before and towards defined end points. At Grange Park, our pupils carry out high quality fieldwork that develops, supports and enhances their learning in geography.

Key drivers within geography units are:

  • Teaching of subject specific vocabulary
  • Application and use of geographical skills such as: analysis of data; map, diagram and globe interpretation
  • High quality fieldwork
  • Reading enhancement through wider subjects (Reciprocal Reading approach)
  • Showcase/communicate their information/knowledge in a variety of ways
  • Revisit to aid long term memory

Impact

Pupils at Grange Park will have a solid understanding of location, place and human & physical geography. This is underpinned by skills and fieldwork in the local area and beyond. The end of key stage content is known and built upon through school. This is measured by:

  • Pupil voice
  • Book monitoring
  • Teacher/parent voice
  • End of unit post tasks
  • Revisit at the end of the year to aid long term memory/retention
