Intent

Our intent in Languages is to immerse the children in another language and culture to encourage them to become lifelong language learners.

The focus language at Grange Park Primary School is French, although, the choice of language is secondary to the nurturing of confidence, enthusiasm and a love of languages. Through discrete teaching sessions we aim to facilitate the development of effective and transferrable language learning knowledge and skills that will provide a gateway to the wider world.

Implementation

Our Languages curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s skills in languages, through regular discretely taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.

As we do not have any specialist Language teacher in school we invested in a scheme of work called ‘Salut!’ which provides IWB resources which also supports correct pronunciation. The scheme of work has 12 main units which equates to 1 per half term across Key Stage two.

Key drivers within Language units are:

  • Teaching of subject specific vocabulary
  • Communicate their information/knowledge in a variety of ways
  • Revisit to aid long term memory

Impact

The learning challenges used, to plan and teach Languages, ensure that children are accessing work at age related expectations, with regular opportunities to be challenged through higher-level objectives. Children are assessed according to age related expectations in line with National Curriculum requirements for KS2. This is done in line with the school assessment procedures. This information is recorded and monitored by the subject manager through:

  • Pupil voice
  • Teacher/parent voice
  • End of unit post tasks
  • Revisit at the end of the year to aid long term memory/retention
