RAISING ASPIRATIONS AT GRANGE PARK

At Grange Park, we want our pupils to have the skills and knowledge to reach for the stars. We believe in starting early when it comes to careers so we make it a priority within our curriculum. Here are some of the ways we make sure that our pupils are ready for the world beyond Grange Park.

 Raising Aspirations

In Year 5 and 6, we use an award-winning primary school programme from Positive Footprints called Raising Aspirations  and it really does what it says…

This primary school programme is all about raising aspirations and opening up the world of work. It shows children what careers are out there and the skills they’ll need to leave a positive footprint wherever they go in life. It’s also about building their self-belief, their resilience, recognising their qualities and how they could be used in the workplace.

As part of the programme, Y5 and 6 join career webinars and find out about the many varied jobs out there and how to join these careers.

"The children were excited to meet our visitors to EYFS this afternoon. PC Hall and PC Hall (no typo!) came to play alongside the children and talk to them about ways they can help them when they are in need.

The children were very excited to know what their job entails and all about their uniform. Reception children tested out their strength, wearing the heavy vest with the equipment attached. The children asked many questions and shared their experiences of the police.

                                       Positive role models, raising aspirations."

STARTING EARLY

Within our PHSE curriculum, our younger children study about living in the wider world and start exploring the different jobs you can have before widening their knowledge even further with Raising Aspirations in Y5 and 6.

Even our very youngest pupils in EYFS are exposed to people who do lots of different jobs and have had some very special visitors. See some of our special visitors in the photos to the left.

All of our subject progression boards around our corridors have 'What career can I use this subject for?' boards and pupils add to these when they look at a new career. All of our ICC subjects medium planning grids have a linked career that is discussed in line with the unit of work being covered. For example, when studying teeth in science, we look at dentists; when studying rivers in geography, we meet and look at the role of a worker from the Wear River Trust. Our art topics explore artists in different disciplines of this subject and in science, we look at the great scientists past and present.

CAREER CAROUSEL

As part of Aspirations with Positive Footprints, we hosted our first career carousel.
